Perhaps unfairly, Millennials carry many labels, including, “the most useless generation of all time.” However, recent research may explain why some Millennials seem to struggle to cope with doing the things that earlier generations took in their stride: Growing up, moving out, pursuing a career, getting married, buying a home, etc.
A recent survey of adult baby boomers (54 to 72-year-olds), Generation Xers (people aged between 38 and 53), and Millennials (those aged between 20 and 37), conducted by the American Psychiatric Association (APA), found Millennials to be the most anxious generation of all.
Faced with escalating unemployment rates, larger student loans and a lower chance of owning their own home, many Millennials struggle with anxiety and depression. The survey found that young Americans are incredibly stressed about health, safety and the ability to pay their bills.
Conventional treatments for anxiety and depression include antidepressant medications like Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) and benzodiazepines like valium, but these medications carry serious side effects and the risk of long-term addiction. Fortunately, an increasing number of Millennials are turning to a far safer source of anxiety relief: CBD oil.
The publication QZ recently conducted a poll which found that the rate of anxiety is twice as high among Millennials as it is among older generations.
For one thing, ballooning student debt creates a great deal of anxiety, particularly when coupled with escalating unemployment rates. For another, research indicates that many Millennials had “helicopter” parents who have made them believe that simply being is not enough; achieving is all that matters.
Another massive problem for Millennials is the fake online world in which they have grown up. QZ noted:
[M]illennials are the first generation to grow up with sophisticated mobile technology, and a fierce social-media habit. They’re therefore less nourished, so to speak, by face-to-face interactions, which can alleviate some of the symptoms of stress and depression, psychological research suggests. Meanwhile, all the selfie-posting leaves millennial psyches soaking in humble brags, showboating, and deceptive depictions of other peoples’ picture-perfect lives. An increasing number of stressed out Millennials are turning to CBD oil to cope with their mounting anxiety.
As reported by Healthline, CBD is a type of cannabinoid found in marijuana and hemp. While tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) – another cannabinoid found in these plants – is famous for producing a feeling of intoxication, CBD provides amazing benefits without the infamous “high.”
Healthline explains:
CBD oil is thought to work with a brain receptor called CB1. Receptors are tiny proteins attached to your cells that receive chemical signals from different stimuli and help your cells respond.
The exact way CBD affects CB1 is not fully understood. However, it’s thought that it alters serotonin signals. Serotonin is one of your body’s chemicals and plays a role in your mental health. Low serotonin levels are common in depression. Not having enough serotonin can also cause anxiety in some people.
As previously reported by Natural News, Dr. Sarah Brewer, director of the company Healthspan, noted that CBD oil reduces anxiety while promoting relaxation and a good night’s sleep.
After conducting a number of studies, the National Institute on Drug Abuse found that CBD oil lowers stress levels in animals, reducing behavioral signs of anxiety.
In addition, in 2011, a study published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology found that a 400 milligram dose of CBD effectively reduced symptoms of anxiety in patients with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).
Countless other studies have reached the same conclusion: When it comes to anxiety, CBD oil works – as more and more Millennials are discovering.
