Bai zhi TCM formula suppresses atopic dermatitis symptoms

Angelicae dahuricae Radix (ADR), also known in Chinese medicine as bai zhi, has been linked to improvements in several inflammation-related conditions. The authors of a study published in the journal BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine decided to look into the effects of ADR on atopic dermatitis (AR), also known as eczema.

  • The authors induced skin lesions similar to that in AR by applying 2, 4-Dinitrochlorobenzene onto the skin of mice. They then administered ADR orally over a period of two weeks.
  • After the testing period, the animals were sacrificed and tissue samples were collected for analysis. The researchers conducted a histological analysis, immunohistochemistry, blood analysis, RT-PCR, and ELISA assay.
  • The administration of ADR reduced symptoms of inflammation in the mice, as well as the concentrations of inflammatory markers. More importantly, the swelling, redness, and skin thickness that characterize AD also diminished.

These led the researchers to conclude that ADR can indeed suppress the progression of AD and thus, can be used as a treatment for the condition.
